An Owner/Promoter’s Perspective . . .

An Owner/Promoter’s Perspective . . .

from Mary Ann Naumann, Owner/Promoter of Thunderhill Raceway and the Texas Super Racing Series

THR & TSRS Drivers and Teams,

As your Owner and Promoter of Thunderhill Raceway (THR) and the Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Models and Allison Legacys, I’m always looking out for the best interests of the drivers and teams.

With that being said, I’d like to share my perspective on a couple of issues relating to the proposed changes on tires and crate motors.

Along with the Management Team, I’ve spent many hours during the off-season planning and evaluating rule changes in hopes of making racing a little more affordable for both THR and TSRS.  I had also suggested that we have an open drivers’ meeting last weekend to get input from the teams and car owners.

To be real honest with you, I did not feel excitement from the THR teams on the proposed tire change that would potentially save $10 a tire.  Rather, I saw puzzling looks on your faces that showed your concerns about the adjustments that might possibly need to be made on your cars to accommodate the tire change.

On the topic of crate engines, I feel that this option could save the racers some money.  But I also understand that something as simple as a crate engine can also be quite complex.  The claim rule seemed to be a good way to enforce the legality of the crates, and I was encouraged to move forward with adding that option to the rules for 2010.

Following the meeting, however, I’ve had a real tough time trying to determine how to make the right decisions for THR and TSRS.  I know all of us wondered for a couple of months if THR would even be open in 2010 – or could we possibly lose our playground?  How scary was that? Moving forward, would these changes make things better or worse?

I thought about how things are starting to turn around, especially with the hiring of a marketing company.  I now have high hopes that we can look forward to racing at THR at least three more years – and hopefully beyond – with even more and better things to come.

Also, as I’ve said on many occasions – and I feel truly blessed to say this – we have great car counts.  On the other hand, I do realize that idle race cars are still sitting in garages, and I would love to have them back at the track.

Making the right decisions to maximize the car count is a big challenge in itself.  With minimal input and encouragement on the proposed rule changes from the racing teams, I feel the timing just isn’t right to make these major changes right now.

Since 2010 is such a crucial year for THR, I think it’s important that all of the staff and officials are on the same team.  We’re already spread pretty thin, and I’m concerned about our having to manage these changes.  We know we’ve been blessed with wonderful, devoted race teams, and we must all continue the momentum to keep THR alive and well.

In summary, as the Owner and Promoter of THR and TSRS, it’s my decision to continue the 2010 season with the same technical rules that were in place for 2009, with the exception of the “red areas” covered by our Technical Director, Jack Sandefur, in the drivers’ meeting.   The only “red area” that will not be changed as we had originally announced in the meeting is the removal of the bump stops for the TSRS Late Models. We’ve reversed the rule change, and it will remain the same as in 2009.

The 2010 rules for TSRS and all of the THR classes will be released and posted for download shortly on the THR website at www.thunderhillraceway.com.  The changes will be shown in red.

I know these decisions may not make everyone happy, but the proposed major changes would probably have caused some dissatisfaction also.  I feel it’s my primary responsibility to make sure that we have a good place to race, and I will continue to make it my focus throughout the upcoming season.  I plan to use the entire 2010 season to further investigate cost-saving changes that can be included in the rules for 2011.

Respectfully – and with all of my heart – I hope that I have made the right decisions for THR and TSRS.

Terry Barden will rejoin the Texas Super Racing Series staff

Terry Barden will rejoin the Texas Super Racing Series staff

KYLE, TX (December 9, 2009) – It was recently announced that The Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Models would not be traveling to other tracks in 2010 due to economic conditions. As a result, this exciting Late Models series will be included in all racing events (excluding the Crash Fest) at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) in Kyle, TX, next year – starting with the annual Racefest hosted by Full Throttle Productions.

Since the TSRS Late Models will not be considered a local class, the ASA A-Line Super Stocks will continue to be Thunderhill Raceway’s premier class.

As plans continue to be made for the 2010 racing season, yet another change is in the wings.  Terry Barden (La Vernia, TX) has been named as the TSRS Race Director, effective immediately.

Barden has an extensive racing background – starting with being a crew member for Waldo Harper in 1974 at Pan American Speedway in San Antonio, TX. Barden then became a Street Stock driver in 1979 at San Antonio Speedway.  Following an injury in 1987 (two broken legs), Barden retired his driver’s helmet.

Switching gears to an official capacity in 1989, Barden became the Technical Inspector at San Antonio Speedway (SAS).  He was named the Race Director in 1990.

Following his tenure at SAS, Barden joined the ROMCO Super Late Models as Vice President.  When USRA purchased the Super Late Model series in 2005, Barden managed the USRA Super Late Models, along with the USRA Trucks and Modifieds.

Barden then served as the Race Director for Thunderhill Raceway and TSRS in 2006 and 2007. He resigned at the end of the 2007 season to spend more time with his family.

Barden is very excited about this opportunity to rejoin the TSRS staff.

“When I went back to the track as the Grand Marshal for a TSRS race last year, I decided then and there that I wanted to get back into racing,” said Barden. “When Mary Ann approached me about the TSRS Race Director position, it didn’t take me long to give her an answer – probably less than ten minutes! I’m very excited to get back into racing, especially as part of TSRS.”

Barden’s first activity as the new TSRS Race Director will begin this Saturday, December 12, at the THR/TSRS Drivers’ Registration meeting. Following the 2P meeting with all THR/TSRS drivers, Barden will hold an open discussion with all TSRS Late Model drivers to get their input on making the series more affordable.

Mary Ann Naumann, owner and promoter for THR and TSRS, feels the addition of Barden to the TSRS staff will help the series to thrive in the years ahead.

“With Terry coming out of his retirement for TSRS, I feel that the future of this series is a win/win situation – for both TSRS and THR. As the management of THR continues to take so much of my time, I truly welcome and value Terry’s support. TSRS is so dear to my heart, and I’m excited about the future of this series. At the end of 2010, we’ll re-evaluate our traveling status and decide then what works best for those that are a part of this incredible series in 2011 and beyond.”

Stacy O’Brien (Thorndale, TX) wore two hats last year as the Race Director for both TSRS and Thunderhill Raceway.  She will continue to handle the responsibility as Race Director for the THR classes, placing her entire focus on the Thunderhill Raceway drivers.

Thunderhill Raceway is a 3/8-mile, D-shaped asphalt oval track that’s located at 24801 IH-35, on the access road just north of San Marcos (TX)  near Yarrington Road (Exit #210). Information on Thunderhill Raceway may be found on the track website at www.thunderhillraceway.com or TSRS at www.manracingpromotions.com.

Economic times affect the TSRS Late Models

Economic times affect the Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Models

KYLE, TX (December 3, 2009) – The unfortunate economic conditions throughout the country have come to affect the very popular, and only remaining, late model stock car touring series in Texas – the Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS).

Founded in 2003, the TSRS Late Models have been a fan favorite and have raced as a touring series over Texas including Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle), Corpus Christi Speedway, San Antonio Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway (Fort Worth), Houston Motorsports Park and Red River Speedway (Wichita Falls). To fulfill a dream of TSRS founder, Mary Ann Naumann, the TSRS Late Models have also raced at Texas World Speedway (College Station).

A decision has been made to discontinue taking this series on the road during the 2010 racing season because of the tough economic conditions that have taken their toll on many race tracks all over the country, including Thunderhill Raceway (THR), which is the home track for TSRS.  The always-exciting group of drivers and teams, however, will be featured as the premier class at each of the scheduled events next season at Thunderhill Raceway.  By featuring these exciting late model cars, THR is taking steps to provide a solid racing foundation for the racers and fans of Central Texas.

“As many of you know, MAN Racing Promotions LLC owns and operates both Thunderhill Raceway and TSRS,” said Mary Ann Naumann, owner and promoter for THR and TSRS. “We’ve just overcome some major hurdles with keeping the track open, and we’ve realized that we need to put our entire focus on Thunderhill Raceway going forward.  By having TSRS Late Models at THR at each race this season, we can continue to move forward and provide the race fans with exciting racing action and save our TSRS teams some expenses.  We’ll certainly re-evaluate the economic conditions at the end of the 2010 season and see where we go from there.”

The schedule for 2010 for THR and TSRS has been in progress for several weeks, and the tentative schedule will be released in the next few days. The schedule will include approximately 12 fun-filled racing events with many racing classes represented at each event.

“We’re forced to look at all aspects of the racing from a financial standpoint,” commented Naumann. “It’s tough to make a decision like this from a business perspective. TSRS has always been dear to my heart and it’s difficult to take the emotions out of it.  I know we need to think of ways to bring stability to the track, while saving money for the drivers at the same time.  Most of all, we want to make sure we continue to provide a top-quality show for our fans.”

Except for not traveling to other tracks next year, the operating procedures for the TSRS Late Models will remain basically the same. The addition of a new sponsor is also being pursued.

“We’re excited that we’ve been having discussions with a major sponsor for the series that would increase the prize money available to the drivers, if the sponsor is signed,” added Naumann. “All and all, I’m very excited about the potential opportunities for TSRS in 2010. I think these changes are a win/win for all involved.”
